Opened in 1901 Penalta Colliery produced coal untill 1986 when a fire underground stopped operations, the mine reopened shortly after but struggled to make a profit and finally closed in 1991, in 1939 the mine held the UK record for most coal brought to the surface in a single week. The site is in the first stages of redevelopment into houses and office premises, its planned to convert the ornately decorated winding house into apartments. I've always wanted to climb a mine headgear - now i've fulfilled my dream. |
