Situated in London's up-and-coming Docklands area this building is the last surviving turbine hall of a power station that was built in 1953 and produced power until 1987 after which it was used as a sub-station. The upper levels of the central core contain four main switch halls, Whilst the ground floor is divided into individual turbine halls which would have been filled with pure CO2 to prevent overheating. the central core is double glazed with a one foot air space between the panes to reduce noise pollution. In the Control room block a pipe has burst flooding the parquet floor and drenching the stack of power station floorplans that sits in the corner of the cafeteria. A whole symphony of banging doors and rattling skylights echo's through the vast spaces keeping you constantly on edge. The building was disconnected from the national grid in 2003 and the sub-station moved into the basement of the adjoining development marking the end of 50 years of providing power to the docklands. Planning permission has been given to build apartments on the site. - The Buildings Are Now Demolished (25/8/2005) |
